Positionality Statement - Maritza Torres

I’m very open to the study of atheist students in higher education. While I was raised Catholic I do consider myself to be Spiritual. There are some aspects of the Catholic religion that I respect and honor but for the most part I do not practice the religion in its traditional sense (i.e. attending Church on Sunday and other rituals). I know some of the belief systems of Atheism may be surprising or troublesome for some people I chose to vote for the secular student population because it is a topic that I do not have knowledge about and interested in. I’m actually hoping that I will be able to learn a little bit more about myself and my thoughts and beliefs. Some of the readings from last week’s class truly resonated with me so I’m actually excited to see what we end up learning in this class. With that being said, I’m very comfortable sharing my statements with my classmates and will be very open if their beliefs and opinions are different than mine. I think the diversity of our classroom will contribute to a very enriching and engaging discussion in class. I also believe that our class is very good at respecting one another’s views and thoughts.
